cam is .555/.565 246/250 @.050 with 1.6 rockers, 440 had .563/.563 243/243@.050 with 1.6 rockers.

Both got same 60'. B Engines = 350*/361/383/400 RB Engines = 383*/413/426W/426H/440 * As rare as a free Steak Dinner. We will be focusing on where the driver's side head meets the block, AKA the "deck".







I hope this helps others. Another reason to re-think the bore stroke issue.



The only trouble with this method is that those little pads can be VERY hard to see, especially on an engine that is not exactly clean, not to mention the fact that on A/C cars, the RB's number pad is buried under the A/C compressor and can be extremely difficult to find. And they weigh practically the same, not much difference. Thats one good running 383.



Do not know if a cam was put in.

The 440 is favored because of the extra stroke which of course means huge torque over the short stroke 383. This is a 516 headed engine with nothing special, don't need much to go 11.90.

440 vs 383 Engine & Related. While not as popular as the 451 cid 400 block with a 440 crank, a B block 426 shares a lot of the advantages of the 451, plus the additional bonus of stealth! Chrysler increased the bore size of the 383 to create the 400.

My first stroker engine was the 400/451" using stock 440 crank and rods and custom ROSS dished pistons.

I was told that if I look near the intake manifold I would see a stamping that is unique to the "interceptor" motor...but I can find nothing about that online anywhere? sry about that i was thinking for drag racing purposes! The engine block bottom end and rotating assembly makes up the base for any high performance or racing engine. I've seen a 350, but never the RB 383. Like DartGT posted, the weight difference is in the 10 to 20 lb range depending on manifolds etc.

Car weighs 3730 with me in it and went 1.62 60' with both.

400 has 10-1 comp, 440 had 9.4-1, 440 has 160 psi cranking, 400 has 140.

The way small blocks put a hurting on big blocks it was refreshing to see an actual test perrformed to put another myth to rest based on factual results. .528 mopar in the 440 and a custom ground comp in the 400 that is a tiny bit bigger. Basically, a 383 is just a de-stroked 440. Andy F has several build articles on this combination. The signifiant diferences in HP and TQ was the cam over 50 HP 100ft lbs of TQ. Ok right now I have a running 383, by the numbers its a 68 block, not original to the car with original heads, a torker intake and a holley 750. It costs just as much to build a 383 as it does to build a 440. The 451s as most will know, is not a production engine. If one is talking a 383 Magnum (1968-1971) versus a 400 Magnum (1972-1978, though 1974 was the last year they were un-choked by catalytic converters, etc..), the differences are few but significant. Both were modified!!

The Mopar 400 Big Block engine for Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth makes is a member of the B-series of V-8 engines. Only mopar guys can tell the difference.

383 vs 400 mopar


I don't think a 440 would be harder to build then a 383 because most parts are interchangeable between all Chrysler big blocks.

Thats a quote from Hoover or one of the other engineers from the Ramcharger days. 383 vs. 440? Of course there is the text book answer, "Look for the number stamp pad located here and there." Hence why most people chose the latter.
