Seven News: Elderly couple found dead in Palm Beach homeGEOFFREY Iddon was utterly devoted to his wife Anne, never spending a day apart from her in 61 years of marriage.Yet the retired engineer’s deep loyalty to the petite 82-year-old, refusing to put her in a nursing home when she became blind and developed dementia, ultimately led to her death since what he hadn’t bargained for was on dying before her.“The sad thing was he loved Anne so much, he thought they didn’t need anyone,” neighbour and friend Ivor Burgess told The Daily Telegraph.“The problem was Geoffrey didn’t have a plan B, he didn’t count on him dying before Anna and when he did she was left alone in the house and died after him.“He thought he’d always be there for her. It was a deep love that went sadly wrong in the end,” Mr Burgess said. The couple were found dead in their multi-million dollar mansion in Palm Beach and are thought to have perished two or three weeks before close friend and neighbour David Warren called police when mail he had placed on the doorstep hadn’t been collected.Northern Beaches Police believe Mrs Iddon died of starvation, unable to cope alone without her only carer.Neighbours say the couple’s only daughter, who lives in the UK, had been informed of the deaths and was in a state of “shock”.Anne Waumsley, as she was then known, married her prince in mid-1956 in her local church at Bucklow in Cheshire when she was 21 and he was 22.He was born in Salford, a suburb of Manchester, and the couple moved to Twickenham in London before returning to Cheshire where they lived in the town of Poynton. They appear to have moved to Australia in the late 1970s, settling almost immediately in Palm Beach, where they lived a low-key existence in the exclusive suburb. When their health deteriorated the Palm Beach community rallied around the couple, offering to shop, clean the house and change the bed linen.Sometimes they were allowed in, other times Mr Iddon would turn them away saying, “We’ve got each other, we’re fine.”Fiercely independent, the couple, described as “eccentric” and “reclusive”, rarely mixed with neighbours and repeatedly rejected help from local community services to clean the house and deliver meals on wheels.Nine months ago social workers told neighbours visiting Mr Iddon in hospital after he had broken his hand not to help the couple in an attempt to force them to accept a care plan.Neighbour Neen Weir said: “What do you do when they refuse help from us and community services? You have to keep helping, so we did.“Geoff could not bear to be separated from Anne and refused to put her in a care home.“He adored her and said he would look after her until the end.“They were happy in their own world. He loved her so much he didnt think he needed help caring for her. She died on August 4, 2000 in England. Join Facebook to connect with Ann Iddon and others you may know.
