Leon always greeted me with a smile, a twinkle in his eye, and a warm welcome into his home and office.
However, when you consider that I am from Jordan and was accepted at St. Michael's in 1986 for training, extending training opportunities for overseas medical graduates at the time was a rarity.
I was diagnosed at Saint Michael' Medical Center, in 1973 with myasthenia gravis. Hundreds of thousands of us thank you Dr.Smith.I cannot express how sad I feel about the death of this amazing , wonderful man.
R.I.P. I pray that Leon and Peggy are together and there is not any more pain for them. I worked in a dental practice where they were patients, but I always felt like I was with a friend when they were in the office. As a friend, he was genuine, loyal, and caring. Four of his children became doctors and continue to treat patients as he taught them. A life so well-lived. He was born in 1929 in Yonkers, N.Y., to Phoebe and George Smith, Lebanese immigrants.
May your soul rest in peace. May his family be comforted by his achievements and by knowing the reverence in which his colleagues held him.

When my father become ill in 2002, I contacted Dr. Smith's office. For me, as for numerous doctors who trained at St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark, NJ, he was truly a Giant.
