After the Armistice between Italy and Allied armed forces in 1943, the author left the prisoner-of-war camp in which he had been held for a year, PG 49 at Fontanellato, and evaded the Germans by going to ground high in the mountains and forests south of the Po River. It is his story after the Italian Armistice when POWs were released into the local area. This book became one almost as soon as it was published; I remember it floating in the conversational ether in the mid-1970s, long before I actually read it.‘Its success surely owes something to its memorable title which, haiku-like, brings two universal human passions into collision in a very specific place.

During the Covid 19 pandemic my husband and I walked many miles over Cotswold farm land that is littered with stones, it bought back memories of this book. The true heros of the story are the numerous Italian farmers and families who risk their lives to help and shelter him on his journey. Paperback.

Illustrated by All these years later, it makes sense, now that I live in a similar area in the Tuscan Apennines that he describes so beautifully.I first read this book 20 years ago, and I knew I would want to read it again.
