Using a “bright polished metallic mirror” she sees Anselmus “sitting in a stately chamber (not the usual library), with the strangest furniture, and diligently writing at a desk encircled by “large books with gilt leaves.” Veronica, now “awoke as from a deep dream.” In this vision, Veronica saw Anselmus in the promised “blue” room “diligently writing.” He has passed his probationary test.
His work consists of making exact copies of The more he works with the manuscripts the more familiar he becomes with them, until one day he copies a document that he can understand. The narrator, who previously has told the story in the usual manner, inserts himself into the tale and reports to the gentle reader on the difficulty he is having in bringing his account to an end. Modern translations are useless because they use different wording. In this dream (and we know it's a fantasy-dream because the fairy-figure Lindhorst is in it), Heerbrand informs him that Lindhorst needs a secretary to copy the ancient records of his Atlantean civilization, but warns Anselmus against making mistakes. Lindhorst invites the narrator to his study, where the narrator has a vision of Serpentina leaving a temple with the golden pot in her hands. “The Golden Pot” fairy tale is about Anselmus, who has a split personality.
As an apprentice, or while on probation, Anselmus has been merely copying manuscripts. Full of love for Serpentina, he begins his new job the next day.
